Description
Rapid Set Bedding Mortar for Access Covers and Highway Ironwork
Rapid Set Bedding Mortar combines selected sands, cements and additives to provide fast setting and high early strength. It is designed for installation and reinstatement work where reducing downtime is a priority.
Factory-produced for consistent quality, this chloride-free mortar is suitable for bedding layers from 10–75mm. It achieves a typical compressive strength exceeding 20 N/mm² after one hour, rising to approximately 60 N/mm² after 28 days.
Suitable Applications
- Installation of access covers and frames.
- Bedding street and highway ironwork conforming to BS EN 124.
- Rapid installation of setts, flags and kerbs.
Key Features
- Rapid strength development: allows reopening to traffic after approximately one hour, subject to conditions.
- High compressive strength: typical performance exceeding 20 N/mm² at one hour and 30 N/mm² at three hours.
- 10–75mm application thickness: suitable for a range of bedding requirements.
- Chloride-free formulation: with a declared chloride content below 0.1%.
- Factory-produced quality: a consistent blend from bag to bag.
- 20kg bags: supplied in protective, recyclable packaging.

Mixing Guidance
Prepare the work area before mixing, as this mortar has a short working time.
Use a mechanical mixing method, such as a slow-speed drill and paddle. Carefully add one 20kg bag to 2–3 litres of clean water, depending on the required workability. Mix for at least 3 minutes until a uniform consistency is achieved.
Apply immediately after mixing and within 5 minutes. The mortar begins to set within approximately 10–15 minutes. Do not add water to revive material that has begun to set.
Preparation and Application
Surfaces must be clean and free from contamination. For best results, mechanically roughen the substrate, then saturate with clean water and remove any standing water.
Apply the mortar to the prepared substrate. Place the access cover frame onto the bed and gently tamp it to the required level, ensuring full support without voids. Enclose the frame flanges with at least 10mm of bedding material.
Float-finish and point exposed surfaces to a smooth finish, filling any voids.
Do not use below 5°C or where ground frost is present. Below 10°C, allow extra time before opening to traffic or applying further loads. Protect against rapid drying caused by strong sunlight or drying winds.
Storage
Store unopened bags in cool, dry conditions, raised off the ground on a pallet or shelf and protected from wind and rain.
